Lots o' Links

Today I continued with the task of curating my browser bookmarks.  I hadn't done it in ... oh... I got this computer about 5 years ago and even then, I imported bookmarks from my old computer, so it's been a while.  Believe it or not, there are a lot of dead links!  *LOL*

I've taken care of a lot of them, but I have a folder left to do that holds all kinds of links to writing essays and tip sheets and author advice and all kinds of stuff I've accumulated over the years.  There are a lot of links in that folder.

So that was my day's excitement.  Thrilling huh?  :)

Ah well, they can't all be gems.  ;)

Musing on A Song of Ice and Fire vs Game of Thrones

I stopped watching Game of Thrones back in the beginning of Season 2.  I don't rightly know why, I just did.  I am up to date on A Song of Ice and Fire, having read through A Dance of Dragons, however.  Last night was the premiere of Season 6 of GoT on HBO and it was all over my Twitter timeline and Facebook, so much so that I actually dreamt about it, the TV return, that is - Jon Snow hadn't died, he'd gone off to be a pirate and returned to Westeros at the head of a pirate fleet.

So as I lay in bed this morning, I ended up wondering if George R.R. Martin ever regrets selling the series to HBO when he did.  Now that the show has apparently caught up with the books, and it's been officially announced and reiterated that what is seen in the show will not be following the books in many cases - many more cases than it already has - it sets me to wondering.

I know that GRRM has shared his vision of the story with the producers of the show, but God knows if they're all going to end up in the same place now.  I wonder how that feels, to have one's arguably best piece of work taken from your hands and reformed before you even get the chance to do it your way.  The first time.  The original.   I think he must at some point, no?  Have regrets?  In the wee small hours?  Do all the $$ and recognition he's received thanks to the TV show make up for it?  Again, when he's all alone in the wee small hours, I wonder....

I also wonder if A Song of Ice and Fire, his story,  will be tainted by Game of Thrones and what the TV producers come up with as their story.  Does the original vision of Westeros become something shared between GRRM, David Benioff and DB Weiss instead of GRRM's alone?

That was all some heavy thinking before my first cup of coffee!

Late Night Blogging

I'm trying to blog or whatever regularly, but sometimes it's hard because nothing exciting happens for days on end in my life!  *LOL*   Which, you know, I'm okay with except that I've got nothing interesting to blog about.  But, this is part of my getting my mojo back, so...

I could go on a rant about the latest uproar in Romancelandia or even the latest uproars, because there always seems to be a couple of them going at any given time.  I could weigh in on the way the Puppy People have ruined the Hugo Awards in SciFiLandia, but all I know is that the creepy old white men are feeling threatened and hence have fucked shit up.  Then there's the whole Kelly Ripa/Michael Strahan controversy, but I think I said all I need to say on the matter for now on Twitter.

So, let's see... I'm reading a good book right now.  The second in a fantasy series.  The Providence of Fire by Brian Staveley.  Juicy epic fantasy.  I know it's good because I have to make myself put it down at the ends of chapters so that I get about my chores and stuff.  :)

I've decided that I want to crochet a blanket.  It's a Ripple Blanket.  I want to use cotton yarn.  I have a wee bit that I bought to make wrist warmers with that I've been practicing on and I like how it works and I like the feel of it when it's done, so that's what I want to go with.  I'm going to head out to Michaels this week to hunt up enough to actually make a start.  Not sure what colours I'll go with - I'll have to see what they have.  This way, I can do my cross stitch during the day when the light is better and I can crochet at night when I'm not sitting on the computer.

And let me finish tonight's entry by saying that I'm ready for a little bit of warmth.  I'm ready for days with temps in the high teens and nights in the low teens.  This single digit crap has quite worn out its welcome with me.

The 100 - What Annoys Me

I finished watching this week's episode of The 100 a little bit ago and once again, I found myself questioning the time frame of the whole damned show.  In the whole scheme of things, I just sort of lay my own time frame over the action and I can watch it without too much puzzling.

See, here's the thing.  Premise #1 is that the earth has been devastated by a nuclear type storm, supposedly annhilating all life and rendering it unlivable for another 100 years.  Yet... YET... we have life on the planet surface my friends!  Societies, rather primitive, yes... with a ton of customs, some of which hold whispers of customs we would know and they have all new languages with a few familiar words.  I'm not an anthropologist or whatever scientist would study these types of things, but 100 years and such a huge, huge change?  I can't buy it.

Premise #2 - after tonight's show where we learn that it's been 5 1/2 months since the 100 kids were sent down to the planet.  They've sure had a helluva lot of adventures in that time.  And then there's Octavia, who may have been the one paying the most attention in 'survival class' back on the ark, who is now Miss Jungle Survival thanks to her time with Lincoln and his people.  Let's call that happening in 5 months.  Again... having a hard time buying it.  And Clarke becoming so hunting proficient in that same length of time?  It all happens too fast.  Too damned fast.

There are, of course, other little niggling timing things that make me scratch my head, but these are the two biggies.

Time frame's not the only thing that bugs me, BTW.  Clarke's latest outfit bugs me. I call it her Wawanesa outfit.  It does her no favours at all, I don't even think it looks cool. I think it looks like something made to hide a pregnancy.  Is the actress pregnant in real life?  *pause to check google*  Couldn't find anything.  I still say her face has taken on that gentle roundness pregnant women get and then... that awful outfit.  I looked, but couldn't find even one full length pic.

Anyway, for all that, I enjoy the show.  And for a change?  Nobody important died tonight.  :)

Ponderations

Oh, my good intentions.  *LOL*  I really wish I could get better at this blogging thing, but all I can do is keep trying and trying.  Hopefully I will get better at it as time passes.

Today was Publicsac Day here at the house.  The day when all the weekly flyers get delivered to the houses along the street.  The drop-off for the blocks' bags is right next door, so for a good two hours in the morning, the dog barks like a crazy fool, going off every few minutes.  Makes me crazy.

I was thinking back to many many years ago this morning as I made my coffee.  Do any of you remember "Miles For Millions"?  I think it was the first ever walkathon - I'm thinking that it was back in 1968 or 1969 that I did it because I'm pretty sure I was in grade 7.  We walked 28 miles that day.  I had a whole bunch of sponsors, and I'll always remember my Uncle George who sponsored me for $1 a mile thinking that I'd only do 2 or 3 miles... HAH!!  I did all 28!    I found an article on it... Sole Power .    We did other walkathon types of fundraising throughout my high-school years, but never something on this scale.  My feet were a disaster at the end.  *LOL*

Anyway, those were a couple of the things that struck me today.  Exciting, I know, but I'm trying!  *LOL*  Baby steps.

Well Now...

Seems like the last time I was here was back in August of last year.  Shame on me!  One day I'll get this journalling/blogging thing down straight.  *LOL*

I find myself looking for a place to put down thoughts and observations I have that is longer than Twitter and less... well, less possibility for douchebaggery than Facebook.  God only knows what these thoughts and observations will be other than mine - we'll just have to see.  Hopefully this means my hibernation/anti-socialness/depression is finally lifting.  *crossing my fingers*

So what was I on about today.  Well, to start off with, I was bemoaning the fact that most authors don't put maps up on their websites.  See, I read a lot of fantasy and a lot of the books contain maps of the made-up lands/worlds.  And I read a lot - a whole lot - on my ereader, which doesn't show maps very well at all.  Or, as one of my Twitter pals pointed out when I tweeted my desire, family trees.

I stitched some this afternoon while I watched my soaps and my Bondi Vet show.  I'm working on a new project that I have to add to my cross-stitching blog.  It's for Michael because he loves, loves, LOVES wolves.  This is what it looks like...

I really hope my writing mojo comes back soon.  I miss it.  I miss my writing buddies too.  I hope I get over this stupidity soon.

I also have to think about upgrading to Windows 10 on the desktop.  I've been using it on the laptop for a couple of months and I can't say I've had any problems with it.  I still have a few months - until July I think - to make up my mind.  One of these days I'll have to do some online research and see what folks have to say about it after using it for a bit.

And speaking of the desktop, I really have to find a new chair.  The one I bought last spring is not working for me.  I need to get a new one that has a tilt seat and adjustable arms as well as the height, of course.  Michael needs a new one too.  His is totally falling apart.  So if I get a new one, he can have my old one.  And then maybe I'll be able to sit at my desk for longer than a half an hour.

Y'know, I wish I could still drink coffee at night.  I'd do damage to one right now.
